INFOFACTS - Blackpool Tower, wrought-iron structure and major tourist attraction in Blackpool, Lancashire. Blackpool Tower was completed in 1894, and its design was modelled on that of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, which was designed by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 Paris World’s Fair. It is 158 m (518 ft) tall and is located on the Golden Mile, the main seaside promenade of Blackpool. Blackpool Tower is one of the most popular tourist attractions in England. Inside the tower are many entertainments, including a listed ballroom, the famous Blackpool Tower Circus (in the basement auditorium), and an aquarium. In the mid-1990s, as the result of a £13 million transformation, some high-tech rides were added, and the entire exterior of the tower was painted gold. Blackpool Tower was a major landmark of the Victorian period, and was, at the time of it's construction, the tallest artificial structure in Britain.
